Where : Balboa Theater 

Description : Brand achieved mainstream fame in the UK as the host of Big Brother’s Big Mouth and his first major film role in St Trinian’s. He became known in the United States after his major role in Forgetting Sarah Marshall; the film led to a starring role in Get Him to the Greek in 2010. He also worked as a voice actor for animated films Despicable Me. Brand is known for and has stuck to his comedy roots.

daveWhat: Dave Matthews Band

When: Friday September 6, 2013, 7:30pm

Where : Sleeptrain Amphitheater

Description : Dave Matthews Band formed in Charlottesville, Virginia, in early 1991 when vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews decided to put some songs he had written on tape. Instead of simply recording himself with a guitar, he opted to bring in some instrumental help to give his musical ideas more depth. thews found assistance in drummer Carter Beauford and saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who were both accomplished jazz musicians in the local Charlottesville music scene. Based on the recommendation of distinguished local jazz guru John D’earth, 16-year-old musical prodigy Stefan Lessard came on board to play bass. Completing the lineup were keyboard player Peter Griesar (who left the band after a couple of years) and talented and classically trained violinist Boyd Tinsley.

michaelWhat: Feeding the Soul Foundation Presents Michael Tiernan

Where : Jitters Coffee Pub

Description : Feeding the Soul Foundation, a non-profit that creates concerts for causes, is putting on a show featuring cancer survivor and musician Michael Tiernan and friends who will entertain with their emotional, inspiring music for a night of support, community and contribution. Proceeds, and all donations made before or at the event, will benefit Stupid Cancer, a non-profit organization that works to empower young adults affected by cancer by building community, improving quality of life, and providing meaningful survivorship to young adults affected by cancer. Doors open: 7 p.m. Music: 7:30 p.m.

Description : Ten blues acts on two stages, featuring Charlie Musselwhite, Dave Alvin’s Downey Blues All-Stars, Lucky Peterson and many more. Local bands include the Bill Magee Blues Band, Billy Watson & His Submarine Trio, the Fremonts and the Tighten Ups. This is a benefit for the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, with all proceeds going to fight hunger. A donation of two cans of food requested.

Visitors can learn about Styrofoam recycling, energy efficiency and see butterflies! These are just some of the activities and topics that will be featured at the City of La Mesa’s sixth annualfree event is presented by the La Mesa Environmental Sustainability Commission and takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Harry Griffen Park, 9550 Milden Street, La Mesa.

Where : Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church

Description : The spirit of Greece comes alive with the sights, sounds, aromas and hospitality of the Mediterranean during the 35th annual Greek Festival. The grounds of the church will be transformed with an open marketplace that will feature Greek imports, pottery, fine jewelry, artwork, a Greek deli and other treasures. A Fun Zone with games, crafts and miniature golf will be provided for the kids. Award-winning dance groups will perform folk dances in traditional Greek costumes and guests will be able to put their best foot forward with guided dance instruction. Visitors will be serenaded by Southern California Greek band The Olympians and other live entertainers. Traditional Greek cuisine and pastries will be available for purchase. Free Parking available across the street.

Where : William D Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad

Description : This fun-filled day features hands-on artmaking projects and demonstrations of dog agility and intelligence by trainers Dan Roy and Jamie Bozzi and their dogs Bug and Emi. Amazing Dogs Performance times: 11:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. 30-40 minutes each.

Description : Watch your favorite MLB home team go up against the Rockies. The Padres are on the upswing, but third place likely will be their ceiling in the NL West. They went 7-11 against the Los Angeles Dodgers and 6-12 against the San Francisco Giantsthis past season, so there clearly is a talent gap that must be bridged.

Where : The New Youth Orchestra

Description : Every Saturday The New Youth Orchestra fill the hearts and minds of San Diego’s most talented youth musicians with great music. Description : The University of San Diego lead by head football coach Dale Lindsey are ready to rumble against the team of W. Mexico. In 2012, USD finished with an overall record of 8-3 and a conference record of 7-1 and were the co-champtions of the Pioneer Football League.

dog-surfWhat: 8th Annual Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon

When : Sunday September 8, 2013, 8am

Where : Del Mar Dog Beach 

Description : The Helen Woodward Animal Center is hosting its annual fundraising event featuring games, pet vendor booths, costume contest, food and of course, surfing competitions. Owners and their pets will participate in 20-minute heats based on the dogs weight class. They will be judged on their ability to stay on the board, ride the wave and have fun. First, second and third-place winners will be awarded in each weight class. All first place winners from each weight class will move on to the finals. Fees are $35 for dog surfer and human surfer; $10 per dog costume contest. Spectators are free. Proceeds will benefit the Helen Woodward Animal Center.
