What: Sorolla and America Exhibition

Description: The Sorolla and America story begins in 1893, with Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida’s prize-winning submission to the World’s Columbian Exhibition in Chicago.
This task, which would occupy the artist for years to come, may be counted his most significant American commission, but the fame of the Visions of Spain has also served to overshadow other facets of Sorolla’s success in America. This exhibition, organized by Blanca Pons-Sorolla, the artist’s great-granddaughter, brings together masterpieces that will be presented to audiences for the first time in America and Madrid.

What: Sanrio Returns to Comic-Con International San Diego

Description: Sanrio will return to Comic-Con International: San Diego this year to celebrate beloved pop icon Hello Kitty’s 40th Anniversary! Fans can join the celebration with a number of activations inside the convention hall, including special appearances by Yuko Yamaguchi, Sanrio’s Hello Kitty head designer from Tokyo. Ms. Yamaguchi, also known as “Kitty Mama” will sign a free, limited edition collectible poster for Comic-Con badge holders. Outside the convention, Hello Kitty will join fans at Comic-Con Interactive Zone at Petco Park to share hugs and continue spreading the message of fun and friendship. There will also be plenty of giveaways and activities including free temporary tattoos and custom nail art from Sanrio Tokyo’s resident nail designer. Attendees will also learn more about Hello Kitty Con 2014, the first ever Hello Kitty fan convention in the world, being held in Los Angeles on October 30th – November 2nd.

What: Tim Youd: The Long Goodbye

Where: Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego
Description: Artist Tim Youd has undertaken the task of retyping one hundred classic novels, staging his durational performances at locations relevant to the author’s life or the plot of the novel. During much of the month of July, Youd will retype Raymond Chandler’s The Long Goodbye in MCASD’s Krichman Gallery, overlooking the ocean—not far from the La Jolla residence where Chandler wrote the novel. A selection of completed diptychs from the first year of Youd’s 100 Novels project will be presented in Meyer Gallery, along with a number of his eccentric typewriter “portraits,” which take the form of wall-bound sculptures fashioned from cardboard. Taken together, these works stand as the insistently material residue of Youd’s performances, which last weeks and months at a time, but are ultimately ephemeral.
