San Diego Things To Do

San Diego things to do are many and cover just about every activity you can imagine. San Diego is often referred to as being “the little city within a big city,” owing to its close proximity to Los Angeles, with its reputation for party-like atmosphere and teeming nightlife. The winters in Southern California can be harsh, so it’s warm in San Diego all year around. There are a wide variety of local attractions and activities to keep anyone interested in what’s happening in the region.

One of the best known things to do in San Diego, especially around the holiday seasons, is to visit the various national parks. There’s the Mexican national park called Tarahumara; for bird watchers, there’s the Lost Coast National Wildlife Refuge and the Windansea Wildlife Center, and the Sea Caves State Historic Park is a good place for snorkelers. In addition to these, other national parks of note are the San Diego Zoo, the Petco Park, and the Wild Animal Park. The state parkways provide an excellent biking and hiking route but are not as long-lasting. Another popular route, the Coronado Cave Trail, is a bit longer and is lined with luxurious hotels. Along the way, you will meet the charming locals, shop at various boutiques, go on an eco-tour, or tour the historical areas.

For more free things to do in San Diego, start by heading to the beautiful Balboa Park. Founded in 1918, the Balboa Park was one of the first attempts to preserve the native wildlife and landscape of California. There are wild horses, sloths, eagles, and many other species of animals in the park. And because the park is open every day, it’s a great place for the families to spend a day out in the sunshine.

In Old Town San Diego, you can’t miss the famous Zoo Gate. It has a stage and lighted walkways from the parking lot that allows people to stroll around and watch the animals come out to play. The zoo has four different sections: the Aquarium, Marine Science Center, San Diego Zoo and the Children’s Zoo. This all-hours attraction provides plenty of entertainment, no matter what time of day you visit. You might even want to take the family to the historical park during the World War II demolition.

If you’re looking for some night-time activities, the Gaslamp Quarter is the perfect place to explore. You’ll find historical buildings, street performers, and galleries in and around the Gaslamp Quarter. One of the most popular things to do there is the night tours, which visit many different sites around the Gaslamp Quarter including the old historic Gaslamp Quarter houses and the state capitol building.
