Where: Oceanside, San Diego
Description: IRONMAN 70.3 California started out as just IRONMAN in 2000. Two years later it has turned into one of the first IRONMAN 70.3 events and has helped the launch of the popularity of the ‘distance’.
Oceanside, California is offering triathletes the chance to race in the city that birthed the sport in the early 1970’s in Mission Bay. Oceanside, located at the northern end of San Diego’s North County, includes the beach communities of Del Mar, Cardiff, Encinitas, and Carlsbad, it is the home to a conglomeration of surf, triathlon, and beach culture. Just half an hour to the south lies the city of San Diego, full of great zoos, parks, and other attractions to fill a spring break vacation with fun and excitement. Just two hours away, skiing and snowboarding are other amusement options.
The bike course takes cyclists along the Californian coastline to San Clemente, before dipping into the Marine Corps Base at Camp Pendleton. At this region, challenging hills take the cyclists down to view one of the longest fishing piers in California, the Oceanside Pier .
Over half of the volunteers for this race comes from units on Camp Pendleton. The presence of the military makes many participants proud of our servicemen and women.
There are 50 slots for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada.
