x-the-blastersWhat: X and the Blasters

When: Sunday December 8, 2013

Where: Belly Up, Solana Beach, San Diego

Description: X were far from the first punk rock band in Los Angeles, and they weren’t the first to achieve some level of nationwide recognition, but in a very real way, they were the ones who put the L.A. punk scene on the map. X were the first L.A. punk band to be taken seriously by the rock press on both coasts, and at a time when many wondered how punk could thrive in the land of all that was mellow, X played music that was as raw, passionate, and powerful as anything coming out of New York, London, or any other major city.

The Blasters stink of rockabilly. A unique part of the Los Angeles punk scene of the 1980s, they project the essence of small streets of post-war neighborhoods, car culture and the sun-bleached concrete of Downey, California. They are lead by Phil Alvin’s soulful bellowing about causing chaos, chasing women and the loss of the citrus groves.

When: Sunday December 8, 2013

Where: Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl San Diego State University, San Diego

Description: Steve Fisher has guided the San Diego State basketball program to unparalleled heights. In 13 seasons, he has taken a program that regularly missed out on the conference postseason tournament, to one which has become one of the best programs on the West Coast and in the Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll. The best news for San Diego State fans is that the school exercised its option on Fisher’s contract prior to the 2009-10 campaign, which will keep the national championship coach in San Diego for the foreseeable future.

The team finished last season with an overall record of 23-11 and a conference record of 9-7.

Cost: $10-$45
