Join the crowd of fans, celebrities and beautiful horses on Opening Day at the Del Mar Racetrack. Opening Day ushers in the seven-week festival dotted with hat contest, food and beer festivals, concerts and some excellent horseracing. Enjoy the summer days and catch free concerts every Friday with the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop. Hat Contests are a tradition that have huge number of participants donning beautiful as well as outrageous hats. Let loose your creativity and do something awesome with your headgear this year. Where: University Avenue and Normal Street in Hillcrest

Description: San Diego Pride brings together a diverse community and their many, many talents and skills. The annual LGBT Pride Celebration attracts 250,000 and more participants to Hillcrest. The event kicks off with an outdoor rally, followed by a host of political speakers, activists and prize distribution to contributors to the community.

Pride of Hillcrest Block Party will be a hot house of food, drinks, music and dancing. There will also be celebrity performances by Taryn Manning and many DJs. The Block Party will only allow those 21 years of age and above. The Parade is a mile long and is San Diego’s biggest civic event. with over 150 floats and members of Armed Forces, civic organizations, politicians, and others, the parade is unique to San Diego.

The two-day Festival will be held in Balboa Park’s Marston Point area. There will be tons of activities, exhibits, food vendors, beer gardens, performances and more to enjoy.

Where: 10 Evergreen Avenue, Imperial Beach, San Diego

Description: The 2014 Imperial Beach Sun & Sea Festival is set to feature top sand castle sculptors in the West Coast. Tim-Youd-The-Long-GoodbyeWhat: Tim Youd – The Long Goodbye

Where: Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

Description: Artist Tim Youd is staging his retyping of Raymond Chandler’s classic The Long Goodbye at the MCASD’s Krichman Gallery, overlooking the ocean. The venue is not far from Raymond Chandler’s La Jolla residence where he wrote the novel. The locations are always picked by their relevance to the plot of the novel or the author’s life. Tim Youd has undertaken the retyping of one hundred classic novels including The Long Goodbye. He types each novel on a single sheet of paper, backed by an additional sheet using the same kind of typewriter used by the author. He then runs the doubled paper repeatedly through the typewriter until it contains every word of the novel. After completion, they are mounted as a diptych. A selection of completed diptychs will be displayed in Meyer Gallery after the first year of Youd’s 100 novels project.

2014-Over-The-Line-TourneyWhat: 2014 Annual Over The Line Tourney

When: Friday, July 19 to Sunday, 20, 2014, from 7:30 am

Where: Fiesta Island, Mission Bay Park, San Diego

Description: Over the Line (OTL) is a bat and ball game, consisting of two teams and 6 players. The court is roughly 55’ wide. Teammates pitch to the players of their own team. Fly balls that don’t get caught are considered hits. The first three hits by a team in one inning scores a run, after which each hit is considered a run. Games are usually 3-4 innings long unless there is a tie. The team with the most hits wins. Also, if a team leads by 11 or more runs, they are declared the winner.
